The Things You Left Me With

By Sonja Broderick

A hair, cradled in the dimple of the pillow.
Your smell in every fibre of every fabric I possess.
The sound of your somnolence
Whispering me, making me fly.

Many empty bottles clink their reminders.
Singing the deadness of nights lived,
Nights loved.

You left me with a freedom I abhor,
A vacuum that wants never to be full.

That last kiss you left me with,
A curse before my crucifixion
Metered by your steady footfalls
Out the door... carrying my heart.

You left an empty hole
Where at least a half once lived.

But I will see forever
The mystery of your smile.
Truly that was your greatest legacy.
