Born To Survive
By Silvana Krculic
From Italy I wrote you postcards.
Just wanted to send you my regards.
Watched the moonlit Miramar's waters;
Again felt close to you in my thoughts.
I tried to stay in touch--every chance,
But was taken by this crazy dance!
In notes I wrote, I will see you soon.
Honey, I love you more than the moon.
You tried to tell me to stay unchanged.
I swear I tried, but became estranged.
You wrote how my leaving left you pained,
And how you felt alone and shortchanged.
At first I cried, nothing was gained.
No use on leaving hearts on idle and stained.
You called me an Indian giver...
What you asked I could not deliver.
In August I arrived in New York.
Bubbly champagne blew off its cork!
I looked at the sky alone, yet free.
This time I had to do it all for me.
I wanted to dance this crazy dance
To a foreign music, my every chance.
I stand here by the Hudson River.
Lights from the city make my heart quiver.
Watching the rise and fall of the tides--
I am telling the waters all my confides.
With stars watching, I took a deep dive.
I'm on my own, was born to survive.
